APPLIED CLINICAL NUTRITION AS A PREVENTIVE AND THERAPEUTIC TOOL IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CANCER
by Patrick Quillin, PhD,RD,CNS
Cancer is the leading cause of death in America. 42% of Americans living today are projected to develop cancer in their lifetime. The National Cancer Institute has invested over $70 billion in the 35 year “war on cancer†with a resulting increase in the incidence and death rate from cancer among Americans. Cytotoxic therapies of chemotherapy and radiation have not provided the cure for cancer that was once promised. However, nutrition is a low cost, non-toxic, scientifically-validated therapy that can help to prevent or significantly delay the onset of 40-60% of cancers and also substantially improves quality and quantity of life for medically treated cancer patients.
Nutrition helps to change the underlying causes of cancer, thus paving the way for long term favorable outcome in cancer treatment. Reasons for using nutrition as part of comprehensive cancer treatment include:
1) 40% or more of cancer patients die from malnutrition
2) Nutrients make chemo and radiation more of a selective toxin against the cancer and less damaging to the patient.
3) Nutrients improve immune function. When the doctor says “we think we got it all†what he/she is really saying is “there is something less than a billion cancer cells left in your body and now it is up to your immune system to find and destroy the inevitable remaining cancer cells.
4) Sugar feeds cancer. Diet and supplements can help to selectively starve cancer cells.
5) Nutrients work as “biological response modifiers†in changing angiogenesis, genetic expression, prostaglandins, immune functions, apoptosis, and more. Aggressive scientifically-based nutrition therapy can make the patient’s body less supportive of neoplastic growth.
Patrick Quillin, PhD,RD,CNS was Vice President of Nutrition for Cancer Treatment Centers of America for 10 years. He organized 3 international symposia on “adjuvant nutrition in cancer treatment†and edited the textbook on the same subject. His book, BEATING CANCER WITH NUTRITION, has been translated into Japanese, Chinese, and a home study CE course for nurses. He was a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Army Breast Cancer Research Group, and has taught college nutrition for 9 years. His 15 books have sold over 1 million copies. He has earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in nutrition; is a licensed and registered dietitian (LD,RD); and a certified nutrition specialist (CNS) with the American College of Nutrition.
