What Is A "Fat Camp"?

Camp La Jolla Is Not A Fat camp
According to the Dictionary “fat camp” is the slang word for: “a residential camp that helps attendees lose weight.”

However, these days, when one thinks of fat camps, one can picture a child being forced by their parents to stay at a camp that starves children and forces them to workout doing boring activities. Fat camps force the pounds off, only to be put on once the camper returns home.

Camp La Jolla is not a “fat camp”
Camp La Jolla’s focus is on building self-esteem, having fun, creating life-long friendships, and becoming the healthiest, happiest person that you can be.

Unlike fat camps, our campers are not forced to do activities they do not wish to do. Weekly campers view the activities being offered and they choose what best fits their goals, their personality, and their level of fitness. Campers also enjoy working out with other campers who feel the way they do – they share their goals, their challenges and their successes.

Our campers have 3 meals and a snack each day. The food is delicious and plentiful. Campers are taught about correct portion sizes and are never starved in any capacity. Our year-round and onsite Registered Dietitian monitors their meals to make sure that they are getting the proper nutrition they need. Our Registered Dietitian is also on call once the campers return home should they or their parents have any questions or concerns.

Fat camps are a temporary fix. Camp La Jolla is a lifestyle change. We give our campers the tools they need for when they return home. Whether it is our Nutrition Classes, or our Behavior Modification Classes, or our Fitness Activities campers will leave camp knowing exactly what they have to do to continue their healthy life. Campers also receive workout DVDs and a Continuing Success Book filled with all our Summer Tips and Recipes.

For two years, we follow up with our campers. Through Newsletters, phone calls, emails and monthly retreats we will do our best to continue the support once at home. We call our campers to find out how they are doing and what challenges they are facing in their daily life. Campers are also invited to call our 24-hour support center should they need assistance.

Free Camper-to-Camper Conference Calls so that campers can continue the friendships they created while at camp. That’s right; Camp La Jolla will pay for the phone call so that camp friends can continue to support one another at home.
Fat camps are solely based around losing weight. This is summertime - we want our campers to have FUN! Camp La Jolla’s Evening Program includes talent shows and skit nights, Field trips to such places as Disneyland and SeaWorld, Club nights including Photography, Theatre Arts, Dance, and Arts and Crafts are just a few of the ways we have FUN!

We are not a Fat camp. We are a Self-Esteem Camp, a Fun Camp, a Fitness Camp, a Nutrition Camp, a Success Camp and a Friendship Camp all combined into one.
